Conejo Valley Flyers History

The Conejo Valley Flyers is a non-profit club (corporation) chartered by the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA Charter 121) to foster fellowship and safety in the enjoyment of radio controlled model aviation.

In early 1971, Gene Linhart and Dr. Tony Brown were among several modelers in the Conejo who worked with Northrop’s Ventura Rec Club to gain permission to use 40 acres behind the Northrop facility in Newbury Park as a flying site.  The Club flew from a dirt runway until they collected enough funds and permission to pave the runway in late 1974.  For several years, the Club shared its field with a seasonal flock of sheep which cleared the vegetation around the runway providing an excellent flying area.

Club membership reached about 250 members and the Club would put on a free RC model airshow for the public as an offsite event for the annual Conejo Valley Days. This relationship continued until 1998 when the Club was notified that Northrup was selling the property and a new flying site was required.

The Club was without a site until, in March of 2008, it found a new home on the Seventh-Day Adventist property behind their school at the end of Wendy Drive in Newbury Park.  Joe Martin, Rick Esler and others coordinated with the City of Thousand Oaks and the County of Ventura to use the property as the Club’s new home.  Thanks to the generosity of Club members and a grant from the AMA, a 250 foot paved runway and helicopter pad were constructed in February 2012. Membership has grown to over 50 members who now fly fixed wing and helicopters, both electric and fuel.
